The collector’s impulses drive many of the mechanics of what we think of as “the art world”: auctions and sales, fairs and biennales, loans and donations to museums. Indeed, much of the world’s art is in private collections, though we have no idea how much, nor any way to begin to tally it up. Collectors accumulate their troves of paintings and sculpture and photographs for all kinds of reasons – love of art, love of the game of collecting, love of money. (Art is often spoken of as a good investment, one that always appreciates.) And perhaps the most crucial aspect of collecting is possession: the sense that you are buying something that is yours and yours alone.

The concept of ownership has become so embedded in our conception of artwork that the idea of digital “collecting” has long been vexed. Is a digital collection just a series of image files online, pixelated? Couldn’t someone easily “steal” your Jpeg just downloading a copy elsewhere? Is there any point, if you can’t show your prized painting off on your physical wall? NFTs hardly answer all of these questions, but they manage to provide a clear enough articulation of digital ownership to spark the interest of curious collectors and speculators. This new concept of digital possession, however murky it may actually be, is worth quite a lot of money.

Thus the collector’s impulse has finally found its way to the virtual realm, now that the point is less the virtual objects themselves and more the ownership of them. Some people are buying for the crypto gains, and some for the novelty, and maybe a few for the art itself. Artists will have a chance to experiment with new forms, and maybe even poke some fun at the absurd market dynamics. (It would hardly be first time: I am thinking of Yves Klein, the French artist and stunt master who sold documents certifying ownership of part of the Zone de Sensibilité Picturale Immatérielle, or empty space, in exchange for gold; then, if the buyer wished, they could burn the check and Klein would throw half the gold into the Seine.)

But in my view what’s interesting about the dynamics of NFTs in the art world are that, so far, they don’t represent much of a departure at all from big business as usual. A 10-second video created by digital artist Beeple recently sold for $6.6 million in an art auction. But what made this one video different from any number of copies or “forgeries” on the internet that are otherwise indistinguishable from the original?

The video itself is a “non-fungible token” or NFT, a digital asset whose origin or ownership has been authenticated by blockchain technology, much like a digital “signature.” One NFT cannot be exchanged for another NFT, which makes each one uniquely valued.

While this is making it easier to assign monetary values to digital art, critics like Blake Gopnik are afraid this will replicate a problem that’s been affecting the physical art sector for generations: valuing art for its authenticity but not for the art itself.

Blake Gopnik: No, it’s the way people have been thinking about art for about 500 years. We’ve all been completely obsessed with who makes a work of art and proving that it’s the real thing. You know, you want your Leonardo [da Vinci] to be by Leonardo, not to be by a follower, even if you love how it looks, when it’s by a follower. People who buy NFTs, or NFT-based art, just want to know that they’ve got the real version of the rainbow cat video that a million other people just have copies of. But, of course, they’re not copies, they’re exactly the same thing. So people are spending all this money just on these certificates, on these non-fungible tokens, that tell people that you’ve got the real thing. But the real thing isn’t real in any real way.

Brancaccio: I mean, one of the things here through my non-critic eyes is if you go see the “Mona Lisa” in the Louvre in Paris, you can see brushstrokes, so the original is different from seeing the copy in the art book. In the case of this authenticated video, there is no difference looking at the original or a copy.

Gopnik: Yeah, it’s completely insane. But, again, that’s been happening for a long time in the art world, too. I mean, people produce prints, some of which they sign, and those are worth a fortune, and some of which they don’t sign, and those are worth much, much less or nothing at all. So the art world has always been weird about this. It’s always been trying to establish authenticity for objects that really aren’t that different from other objects. But this is just taking it to a new level where your video is absolutely the same as someone else’s.

Now normally in the art world, what you do is when you’ve got, say, a work of video art that you’ve got in a DVD, is you make sure that you don’t release it in a million copies. You just make five copies, and five collectors can own them, you know, for whatever, $100, 000 each. But in this case, people are buying these things because they’re already famous, because they already exist in thousands and thousands or millions of copies. So it’s a really weird reversal. If you’re buying the Nyan Cat, this cat that’s dragging a rainbow after it, you’re only buying it because it’s so famous already, because so many other people actually own it. So it’s a very weird, really absurd, kind of ownership.

Light distance and ranging (lidar) technology has been used to acquire high-resolution elevation and return pulse intensity data for western King County and the southwestern portion of Snohomish County.

This data set is a primarily a combination of the Puget Sound Lidar Consortium (PSLC) data collection effort for Vashon Island and the Seattle-area (2001–2002), and a comparable collection for the remainder of the county and the WRIA 8 portion of Snohomish County through King County’s ESA/SAO Project from 2002 - 2003. Selected data frommore recentelevation mapping projects, including new Lidar data, have been incorporated into the master elevation database. See the Project Area map for project area boundaries phases. Even though the master elevation database represents the most recent data available, in areas where data sources overlap, all versions of the elevation data are stored at the 7500 ascii tile level.

Multiple data products include the Digital Ground Model (dgm) ascii, tin, lattice and hillshade data sets; Digital Surface Model (dsm, aka top-of-vegetation) data in the same formats, plus supplemental Last Return and Intensity data.

The PSLC’s extensive cooperation in this data sharing arrangement has allowed us to develop a seamless digital elevation database, along with related derived products, for the entire area of interest (AOI).

There are six primary data products developed from the lidar acquisition projects, some in more than one data format to help meet a range of business needs and software applications.

There are sixteen unique lidar data file sets available from the Spatial Data Warehouse. Some of these products are available only at a single tiling level but the key elevation data sets are provided in more than one format to assist in meeting a range of business and analytical needs. Maps That Changed The World

The complete county project area and detailed level of the elevation data requires significant storage capacity. Storage requirements vary depending on the data set of interest and the format in which it is stored. This summary table provides a general overview of the data sets, their overall size and individual file size specifications.

To supplement the detailed elevation data to be provided by lidar, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) from the USGS National Elevation Database (NED) have been downloaded and added to the Spatial Data Warehouse in order to centralize all elevation data to a single locale. The USGS data covers the entire Puget Sound lowlands at two different resolutions and is generally the best elevation data available outside the lidar project areas. In addition to the elevation grids, the data is available as hillshade images and as a 500-foot index level contour set. The lower resolution data is provided as a single AOI piece, while the higher resolution NED data is provided as county-by-county pieces. State-wide elevation data is not online though a hillshade image covering the entire state is available.

Users with access to the King County Spatial Data Warehouse (i.e., Plibrary2 and Plibrary3) can access the elevation data in a range of formats and tile sizes. All lidar-derived and USGS elevation data is found in Plibrary3 at \\\\gisdw\\kclib\\plibrary3. King County users are encouraged to map their ‘J’ drive letter, if available, to \\\\gisdw\\kclib\\ which will allow them access to all three libraries of the Spatial Data Warehouse from a single drive letter.

Puget Sound Faults

In addition to the elevation data stored in Plibrary3, this library will serve as the central point for all King County enterprise image and raster data. All data will be organized into a standardized tiling scheme with a structured naming convention to make data access easier and more informative. A more in-depth discussion of Plibrary3 and the tiling/naming conventions can be found in "Plibrary3 Reorganization" (341 Kb Word Document). Put options, often used to protect against losses or position for declines in a stock's price, outstripped bullish calls in volume by a ratio of more than two to one on Tuesday, continuing a trend that has seen bearish derivatives bets on GameStop grow over the last week-and-a-half.

The videogame retailer's shares, which have seesawed wildly with hedge funds and other investors making or losing billions of dollars, were last down 56.3% at $98.33. They are now worth less than a quarter of their high of $483 last week.

The positioning marks a reversal from six straight weeks of GameStop calls dominating daily volume, as options bets helped fuel a 1, 625% rally in the video game retailer's shares in January that triggered heavy losses among some investors who had shorted the stock, betting on its price to fall.

"People are putting on puts in order to profit from the eventual GameStop short squeeze to be over, " said Matt Amberson, principal at options analytics firm ORATS.

Some investors may be turning to puts as an alternative to shorting the stock, analysts say. Demand to borrow GameStop shares has subsided significantly in recent weeks but remains high overall, making it relatively expensive to short the stock.

Last week, implied volatility in GameStop - an options-based measure of how much traders expect the shares to gyrate in coming days - suggested daily moves of as much as 69% in either direction, according to Amy Wu Silverman, equity derivatives strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

A video of a North Carolina beach house being dismembered by a voracious ocean was a viral hit this spring. But it won’t be long before the novelty wears off. As sea level rises and storm surges grow more intense, beach towns on every coast of the United States will soon be sacrificing more real estate to Poseidon. A 2018 study by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that more than 300, 000 coastal homes, currently worth well over $100 billion, are at risk of “chronic inundation” by 2045.

The matter of large swaths of deluxe real estate erected in harm’s way is not new. But as extreme weather events compound, the obvious perils of waterfront living are growing both more obvious and more perilous. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration cited 20 different “billion-dollar weather and climate disasters” in 2021. The analytics firm CoreLogic counts more than 7.5 million homes with “direct or indirect coastal exposure and subsequent risk from coastal storm surge and damage from hurricanes.”

In the past half-century, American beach towns shucked the bohemians and the beachcombers, the drifters and the sun worshipers. The family that was once affluent enough to own a seaside cottage has grown up, grown very rich and moved into a turreted fantasy with commodified sea views. A few years ago, I asked an old-timer at the Jersey Shore why her town was bursting with people but the beach was strangely uncrowded. She told me that the new rich spend much less time by the water’s edge. “It’s all about the houses, ” she said.

Indeed, it is. Barrier islands in Florida, North Carolina and New Jersey are situated a few feet above sea level. In many places, including the Jersey Shore and the Texas Gulf Coast, the land is simultaneously sinking as the water rises. Sanibel Island in Florida, a multibillion-dollar habitat for retired C.E.O.s, may be in its final decades before the Gulf of Mexico permanently moves in. The fabulous town of East Hampton on Long Island issued a report in April warning that on its current trajectory, the town will evolve into “a series of islands” over the next half-century. California beach towns from Del Mar in the south to Stinson Beach in the north are reckoning with an ocean poised to submerge them.

Beach towns have long kept their beaches plump by dredging sand offshore and pumping it onto eroded shorelines. Some $7 billion worth of beach replenishment programs, most under the auspices of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, have added sand and bolstered property values in some of the most exclusive havens in the United States. Federal taxpayers typically pick up two-thirds of the tab.

Beach towns on the Pacific and Gulf coasts have spent millions tapping offshore reserves, but the Eastern Seaboard has been the prime beneficiary of dredging. The corps has been engineering beaches in Cape May, New Jersey, for a century. Palm Beach County, in Florida, has had its beaches replenished more than 70 times. Many beach towns receive publicly financed sand and then turn around and charge the public to sit on it.

Yet even the most highly subsidized towns can’t replenish a beach that’s underwater. In a land where the wealthy have succeeded in privatizing accretion and socializing erosion, what will happen when rising sea levels, combined with more violent storm surges, overwhelm beach real estate? As the water rises, private insurance is poised to grow increasingly elusive. Federal flood insurance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency is capped at $250, 000 for homes, not even one-tenth of the value of many houses in beach communities. With the federal insurance program billions in debt, FEMA is ready to abandon the most high-risk properties — if only Congress would let it.

Environmentalists and scientists have long called for “managed retreat” from shrinking coasts. But in politically fractured America, who could possibly “manage” such a retreat, and who would pay for it?

In New Zealand, an analysis of coastal erosion along Hawke’s Bay, an area known for both beaches and vineyards, estimates that a gradual “planned retreat” of fewer than 1, 000 properties over the rest of this century would cost more than $1 billion (or two billion NZD). The consultants who produced the analysis wisely ducked the question of who would come up with that sum.

If you’ve paid attention to American politics, however, you might have some clues about who will likely end up holding the bag here. Consider the Army Corps of Engineers proposal for Galveston Bay in Texas. Sea rise and aggressive surge threaten oil, gas and petrochemical facilities around Houston, which in turn threaten the entire region with toxins in the event of a major storm. So the corps has proposed a massive barrier across Galveston Bay, along with other coastal fortifications. Two-thirds of the total cost, currently projected at more than $30 billion, would be borne by federal taxpayers, with about a third covered by state and local taxpayers. The oil and gas industry, the folks who helped supercharge the seas while flashing some truly impressive profits along the way, would owe nothing.

You can readily apply this model to the beach. The sea’s coming rampages will no doubt be portrayed as acts of God. Aside from a half-century of increasingly frantic cries from climate scientists, there will have been practically no warning. (In Virginia Beach, where the evangelical businessman Pat Robertson built his empire, God’s wrath will no doubt be attributed to the sinfulness of political opponents rather than the depredations of carbon.) With their beachfront estates under assault, our nation’s soggy millionaires will seek relief. Which politicians, many of whom use their donors’ elegant summer homes as fund-raising venues, will deny them?

The lords of the beachfront were late to the coastal real estate game. The beach was initially deemed the most useless, undesirable space on the North American continent. (Imagine rushing past the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard in your haste to stake a land claim in Ohio.)
